Dolls were not just a toy but have long held a mirror up to society. Until the 20th century, rural families usually made their own. Our demonstrations at the Solms Manor House give visitors an insight into how dolls, cuddly toys and glove puppets can be made from scraps of fabric, pieces of fur, flax or wool. We also show how Kasper, the hero of German puppet theatre, and other fairy tale figures can be made from sawdust and papier-mâché. On selected dates, children can even get involved in the doll making action themselves as part of our hands-on activities.
