The Red Höhenvieh Cattle

The Celts bred red-brown cattle from which the Red Höhenvieh cattle are derived. Over time, regional subspecies were bred and eventually became named the »Vogelsberger Höhenvieh«. These robust cattle originally came from the barren Central Upland regions of Germany and were used to supply both meat and dairy products. In addition, these cattle were used as draft animals since few people could afford horses. The crossbreeding of higher-yielding beef and dairy cattle has resulted in the Red Höhenvieh cattle becoming an endangered species.
