Fire and Flame
The new permanent exhibition “Fire and Flame” shines a spotlight on firefighting and tells the story of the fire service through the history of the former fire station from Hainstadt. In earlier times, every household kept a bucket ready to fight fires, with water drawn from nearby wells or ponds. Today, fire brigades work with modern communication systems and advanced technology. Running water is available in every home, and hydrants provide quick access outdoors as well.
Volunteer and professional fire brigades trace their origins back to the 1850s. Today, volunteer fire departments play a vital role in the social life of communities throughout Hesse. The exhibition illustrates how firefighting developed in rural Hesse and highlights the continuing importance of the fire service in our society. It also explores current issues of fire prevention and safety, offering children and adults alike an engaging look into the many tasks of the fire brigade – far beyond putting out fires.
